I just want to preface to anybody reading this who is interested in taking up photography, these things are NOT necessary to start. Invest in your passion throughout your life. You don’t need to get it all at once. That being said, these are the things I've chosen to invest in and love, along with some other non-camera gear items!
Canon 6D Mark ii- I LOVE this camera. The touch screens is a ‘can’t live without’ at this point, and it’s fairly priced.
Canon 85mm- A go to for single person portraits
Canon 50mm- The lens that lives on my camera
Sigma 35mm- I got this lens for Christmas and have really enjoyed playing around with it so far!
External flash- Honestly, reaching for my flash is a LAST resort, but especially with weddings, it ends up being a necessity most of the time.
SOOOO many 32gb SD cards- I use multiple (if need be) 32gb cards over one bigger card during events/weddings. It’s just a personal preference.
A couple backup camera batteries- Even during weddings, I typically only need the one that’s in my camera already, but you can never be too safe.
A little baggie full of spare batteries for my flash- Same concept as camera batteries.
Snacks… I always have snacks on hand for myself during weddings or days where I’ve got some back to back shoots, or for family shoots as bribery for the kids (with the parent’s permission of course) haha!
Business cards- I keep those with me all the time. You never know when you’ll be handing one to a potential client
Makeup wipe- I know my eyes have a tendency to water at the most inconvenient times, I’m prepared for my clients to do the same haha!
A glasses cloth (I don’t know the proper name for these things)- In case I need to get some schmutz off my lens… or a client’s glasses!
As you may be able to tell after reading all that, my camera bag acts as a big, bulky tote bag on shooting days. My mom always said "It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it." I used to roll my eyes when she'd say that as a kid but kind of live by it now!
